Aims & objectives
What this Level 1 course sets out to achieve for dental professionals.
Aim
To equip dental professionals with the core knowledge required for Level 1 CBCT practice: justifying, undertaking and performing basic interpretation of cone beam CT imaging of the dento-alveolar region, safely and in compliance with IR(ME)R 2017.
Objectives
- Apply the justification principle and selection criteria to decide when CBCT is — and is not — the right imaging choice
- Understand the IR(ME)R roles of referrer, practitioner, operator and owner, and the duties of each
- Manage referrals, service level agreements and patient data in line with IR(ME)R and UK GDPR
- Explain the factors governing radiation dose and apply ALARA in everyday scanning
- Select an appropriate field of view and resolution for common clinical indications
- Recognise normal CBCT anatomy of the dento-alveolar region and common normal variants
- Identify common artefacts, prevent avoidable ones, and distinguish artefact from pathology
- Use multi-planar reconstruction, nerve tracing and implant planning workflows at an introductory level, and recognise when to refer for a specialist report
